One of Africa’s most wanted al-Qaida suspects has been killed in a US raid in Somalia, officials said today.

Abdi Fitah Shawey, deputy mayor for security affairs in the capital San’aa, said intelligence agents confirmed that Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan died in yesterday’s attack in southern Somalia.

US military officials said American forces were involved in the raid.

Mr Shawey did not elaborate on the intelligence reports.

Nabhan was a Kenyan wanted for questioning in connection with the car bombing of a beach resort in Kenya and the almost simultaneous attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner in 2002.

Ten Kenyans and three Israelis were killed in the blast at the hotel. The missiles missed the airliner.
