German carmaker BMW said today it is recalling 4,000 vehicles worldwide due to defective control units in V8 and V12 petrol engines.

BMW said in Frankfurt new vehicles registered between May 13 and July 6 were affected.

“Due to a temporary production fault of a supplier, deficient parts were supplied and installed in new 5, 6 and 7 series models and X5 models with V8 or V12 cylinder petrol engines,” BMW said in a statement.

The engines of these vehicles may cut off after a short running time, which could lead to failure of the power steering, as well as the brake booster following repeated operation of the brake, potentially causing an accident.
