Irish athletes have performed well during the early finals of the Triple A championships in Birmingham, winning both 3,000 metre walks and the women’s 1,500 metre and 3,000 metre races.
Gillian O’Sullivan, the defending champion, lowered her national record in the 3,000 metre walk by more than five seconds, clocking a championship record of 12. 23.45’.
Robert Heffernan retained his men’s 3,000 metre walk title in an Irish record 11.19.27’ smashing the championship record. With pre-race favourite and Olympic finalist Hayley Tullet pulling out of the 1,500 metres final feeling unwell, Freda Davoren won easily in 4. 19.85’, while Maria Lynch clocked 9.35.92’ to be a runaway winner of the 3,000 metres.
