Luton Airport and Stansted Airports have been closed because of the bad weather in the areas surrounding London.
Luton Airport spokesman Simon Harley said: “Unfortunately due to the adverse weather the airport is officially closed for the next two to four hours.
“We are advising all passengers to turn up as normal, however be warned that they could be subject to delays or potentially cancellations. All passengers with flights after 9am today are advised to talk to their airlines directly for further information.”
He added that around 15,000 to 20,0000 passengers will be affected by the closure.
Meanwhile hundreds of people were left waiting at Stansted airport after the runway was closed because of heavy snow.
Airport officials said travellers should check with airlines before setting out to the airport.
“We are trying to clear the runway and get the airport open again,” said a spokesman.
“But the snow is falling and that may be difficult. The terminal is very busy at the moment and there are no flights.
“We would advise people to check with their airlines before setting out to the airport.”
Across East Anglia schools were closed because of the bad weather and police were advising motorists to travel only if necessary.
In Cambridgeshire about three inches of snow fell during the early hours.
