Four stars cut in clean sweep of soap

Four stars of Brookside have been axed in a clear-cut of the soap.

Four stars of Brookside have been axed in a clear-cut of the soap.

The actors, including former Nolan Sister Bernie, will leave the Channel 4 show in October.

Nolan, who plays Diane Murray, will leave the Liverpool-based soap along with Leon Lopez (Jerome Johnson), Marji Campi (Jessie Hilton) and Kenneth Cope (Ray Hilton).

Mersey TV boss and the soap's creator Phil Redmond insisted it was not an axing rampage.

He said: "It has been my aim to re-position Brookside in its 20th year, to keep the soap fresh, to deal with family issues and to create an agenda that others follow.

"Characters come and go. This is a natural progression.

"I hate it when people say characters are for the chop. We have a clear definition when a story and a character's life is at an end.

"That's life in soap operas."
