Hellboy
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Selma Blair, Rupert Evans
Cert: 12.
Another film based on a cult comic-book hero … though one with a vastly different twist than the others.
It is, of course, daft as all get out, but in the deft hands of del Toro the title-character is given more depth and humanity than might have been anticipated.
We are instantly on his side against the forces of evil, who are here the Nazis (it is l942, things are beginning to go badly for Hitler, he calls up demons to help out, one escapes, etc., etc., etc).
There is no idea of control in the film but that hardly matters as the action hots up and we, surprisingly, grow closer to the characters.
It is also a film full of atmosphere and mood-swings … a good film all round.
