Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has promised to defend the interests of Irish beef farmers at a meeting with his EU counterparts this week.
Minster Coveney travels to Hungary tomorrow where he will warn other EU leaders against rushing into any trade deal with South American countries.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, the Minister said it would be disastrous for the Irish livestock sector if the EU market were flooded with cheap Brazilian beef imports.
"We clearly produce beef (in Ireland) to a very different standard than is the case in Brazil," he said.
