US compensates China for Belgrade embassy bombing

China has received £19m in compensation from the US for the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade during the Kosovo war.

China has received £19m in compensation from the US for the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade during the Kosovo war.

The payment was promised in December 1999 as part of a deal aimed at appeasing Chinese anger after the bombing.

As part of the deal, China also agreed to pay £1.95 million for the damage done by the mobs to US offices.

The US has promised to pay £3.06 million to those injured and the families of three Chinese citizens killed in the May 7, 1999, bombing in the Yugoslav capital, part of NATO's 1999 air war against the Serbs.

The US has repeatedly apologised for the attack, which deeply damaged ties between Beijing and Washington, insisting it was a mistake caused by faulty intelligence.

China has publicly rejected the US explanation, using the announcement on the government-run Xinhua News Agency to once again demand a full investigation and punishment for those responsible.

"China demands the US side conduct a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the bombing, severely punish the perpetrators and give a satisfactory account of the incident to the Chinese people," Xinhua said.
