Federer maintains belief to pull through

World number one Roger Federer never believed he would fail to reach the quarter-final of the Australian Open – despite being taken to a deciding set by Tommy Haas.

World number one Roger Federer never believed he would fail to reach the quarter-final of the Australian Open – despite being taken to a deciding set by Tommy Haas.

Federer had looked as though he would make it through in straight sets after an emphatic start but the German hit back to level the match and entered the final set with all the momentum.

However, the Swiss player showed all his class to keep cool in a potential crisis, hitting 18 winners and making only six unforced errors in the final set to claim victory by a score of 6-4 6-0 3-6 4-6 6-2.

Federer said: “I’m happy with the way I played tonight. I thought the first two sets I played perfect tennis but after that he played pretty good.

“It was a pity I couldn’t close it out in three but I’m happy with the way I played in the end and it’s a good feeling to have.

“I was never really too nervous to be honest – I just tried to focus on my own service games.

“He was the guy who had to react and work. I was two sets up and never really close to losing. I just thought if I could get one break it would change the match and the momentum and it did.”

After securing the first set, Federer raced through the second in just 28 minutes and at 2-2 and 15-40 down Haas looked finished but he responded by winning 11 straight points.

The German served out the set and took the fourth to set up a decider but it was Federer who took advantage of a close line call to go 3-2 up – prompting Haas to argue with the umpire – and then closed out the game to set up a last-eight clash with fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko.

A frustrated Haas bemoaned his inability to come up with the big shots at critical times.

“I thought towards 2-2 in the fifth it was very open and then he basically just came up with some great shots to break me,” said Haas.

“Unfortunately I hit one of the balls really close next to the line which I guess was out.

“That cost me the early break. Then he just took it to another level and played some awesome tennis.”

While both Federer and Davydenko had tough five-set matches, fellow seeds Nicolas Kiefer and Sebastien Grosjean progressed with straight-set victories.

Davydenko had to battle back from two sets down to claim a 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-2 6-3 victory over Dominik Hrbaty.

The Russian took advantage as the Slovakian began to tire towards the end of the game after already playing three five-set matches on the way to the fourth round, Davydenko taking more than three hours to seal the win.

Kiefer had to toil for a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-3 win over Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela, who had beaten Britain’s Andy Murray in the first round.

The first set went with serve but it was the German who pulled through thanks to two breaks of serve in the tie break.

The second set was marred by errors with five successive breaks in serve but Kiefer prevailed before claiming the important break in the fourth game of the third set.

The 21st seed closed out the match and will now play Sebastien Grosjean who beat fellow Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Grosjean claimed an emphatic victory after a difficult first set as both players battled to hold on to their serve.

The 25th seed found the important break before racing away to claim a 7-5 6-2 6-2 win.
