Zimbabwe: People have nothing to lose, says US ambassador

The US ambassador to Zimbabwe said opposition to President Robert Mugabe had reached a tipping point because the people no longer feared the regime and believed they had nothing left to lose.

The US ambassador to Zimbabwe said opposition to President Robert Mugabe had reached a tipping point because the people no longer feared the regime and believed they had nothing left to lose.

Zimbabwe’s government and party were in disarray and could no longer govern effectively, Christopher Dell said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Growing numbers within the regime and the party also wanted Mugabe to step down, he said.

Dell stressed he was not advocating or predicting any violent overthrow of the government, but noted there was disaffection within the military and a split in security forces.

The economy was in freefall and the people believed the government was taking away their last hope, he said.
