Several people are believed to have died when an Amtrak passenger train derailed in Iowa, injuring at least 47.
Police believe there were several fatalities in the crash which took place in Adams County 70 miles southwest of Des Moines shortly before midnight.
At least four carriages of the train derailed in a remote area, without road access, hampering the rescue effort. The train was carrying 195 passengers and 15 crew members. Some of the victims have been transported to hospital by helicopter.
