Michael Owen hopes the arrival of Nicolas Anelka will help Liverpool clinch their first Premiership title.
Former Arsenal striker Anelka has agreed to a surprise loan move to Anfield until the end of the season.
He helped the Gunners to the Double in 1998, but his fortunes have since taken a turn for the worst following turbulent spells at Real Madrid and Paris St Germain.
Gerard Houllier has now offered him the chance to revive his career at Anfield, where he could form an explosive frontline with pacy England hitmen Owen and Emile Heskey.
Owen said: "It was a shock to find we had signed Anelka because it had not even been hinted at.
"But it looks a good signing for us. I can vividly remember the goals he scored in helping Arsenal to win the 1998 Double and if he is capable of doing that for us it will be well worth him coming here.
"Hopefully that will bring us the goals which can win the title."
It is hoped Anelka will fill the void left by the £1mn sale of Robbie Fowler to Premiership rivals Leeds.
He will join from PSG with a view to a permanent move but the deal remains subject to the player passing a medical.
