Three people were killed and a fourth was missing today after torrential rain swept across southern Germany, flooding streets and cellars.
Two men drowned in a parking garage in Diedorf when a drain cover burst, filling it with muddy water.
An 81-year-old woman from the same Bavarian town died when the cellar of her home flooded. None of the victims were identified.
Police said the two men, aged 48 and 56, had rushed into the garage to save their cars as a flood wave swept through the town, inundating dozens of houses.
They were able to get out of their vehicles once the water started pouring in, but didn’t make it to the exit in time.
Red Cross divers retrieved their bodies.
Police in another town in Bavaria were searching for a woman who also tried to rescue her car from rising floodwater. The 28-year-old was still missing on this afternoon.
Heavy rains overnight caused severe flooding and property damage across southern and eastern Germany. Some residents were warned about contaminated drinking water.
The wet weather also hit Austrian, Switzerland and southeastern France, where an elderly woman died when her home collapsed.
