Gary McSheffrey ended his scoring drought as Birmingham survived a brave second-half fightback by their League Two opponents to reach the third round of the Carling Cup.

The former Coventry player added to Blues striker Garry O’Connor’s opener with his first goal since netting against Stoke in February.

Blues dominated the opening half but they were left hanging on after the impressive Theo Robinson had reduced the arrears with 18 minutes remaining.

With 18 minutes remaining the Bulls were given a lifeline when Robinson’s fierce drive flew past Kingson after Easton had cut the ball back into his path.

The visitors were now in the ascendancy and Kingson made another double save to keep out two Robinson attempts before Taylor clipped the rebound across the face of goal.

McSheffrey came close to restoring City’s two-goal lead with a shot which flew inches wide.
