US Open to offer record prize money
The singles champions at the US Open will receive record prize money, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced.
The men's and women's singles champions will earn $3.5million (€3.15m), €0.7m more than Andy Murray and Serena Williams were awarded for winning this year's Wimbledon.
A total prize fund of $46.3m (€41.7m) - €3.5m more than in 2015 - has been confirmed by USTA for the year's final grand slam, which starts on August 29 at Flushing Meadows.
The runners-up in each singles tournament will receive $1.75m (€1.57m) while a first-round defeat will be worth $43,300 (€39,000). The winning team in the doubles competitions will share $625,000 (€564,000).
USTA president Katrina Adams told www.usopen.org: "We are proud that this year's US Open will offer the richest purse in tennis history.
"We continue to invest in all aspects of this world-class event to provide the best services and experiences for the players, our fans and all of the US Open partners."
