Gazza wants Shearer to carry on

Former Newcastle and England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has pleaded with Alan Shearer to put off his retirement plans.

Former Newcastle and England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has pleaded with Alan Shearer to put off his retirement plans.

Gascoigne is convinced his one-time international team-mate still has plenty to offer for their home-town club beyond the end of the current season, and admits he has told him so.

“I have told Alan to stay for another year,” he said. “I like watching Alan play. I was gutted when he packed in for England – we needed him.

“Newcastle need Alan Shearer and I think the whole city would agree with me. I hope he stays on for another year.

“Where else, Alan, are you going to get £60,000 (€87,000) or £70,000 (€101,600) a week?” he added with a mischievous smile. “You are not going to get that just doing your garden.

“He gives 110% and he deserves his wages, not like some people that come up here. I hope he does and I hope he lifts the FA Cup. But if Newcastle don’t win it this year then who knows? He might even stay for another year and try to break that record.”
