Vijay Singh has claimed the world number one spot from Tiger Woods after winning the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston tonight.

The Fijian won by three strokes to end Tiger Woods’ five-year reign at the top.

Singh, playing alongside Woods, hit a final round 69 to claim victory on 16 under par.

Woods and Australia’s Adam Scott were three shots back.

Singh said: “I have played pretty well for the last two years and just kept going and trying to win golf tournaments.”

Woods was disappointed to lose top spot but happy to have been at the top end of the leaderboard after an indifferent year.

The American, whose run at number one lasted 264 weeks, said: “What is exciting about it is this is the best ball-striking week I have had all year.

“I am excited about the way I am playing and it feels good.”
