Game Group today said it had enjoyed a strong start to the year as gaming fans rushed to snap up the newly launched Sony PlayStation 3.

The group said like-for-like sales soared 44% in the 12 weeks to April 21 following the launch of the new console.

It also announced plans to open 80 new international stores during the year ahead.

The update came as the company posted an increase in pre-tax profits of more than 400% to €43.3m for the year to January 31, boosted by the release of new hardware, notably the Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo Wii.
