M&S named in most annoying food adverts list

The M&S “This is not just food…” commercials have been voted one of the worst ever food and drink adverts in a poll for BBC magazine 'Olive'.

The M&S “This is not just food…” commercials have been voted one of the worst ever food and drink adverts in a poll for BBC magazine 'Olive'.

They rubs shoulders with Budweiser’s “Whassuuuupppp?” campaign in the list of five adverts which made readers “want to throw the TV out the window”, Olive says.

Commercials from M&S Food are described in the magazine’s February edition as: “This is not just food porn, this is M&S food porn”.

Ferrero Rocher’s ambassador’s reception, the Hovis bicycle commercials and the Milky Bar kid campaign make up the other adverts in the Olive worst five list.

The magazine asked its panel of 1,000 readers to vote for their 10 most liked and five most disliked food and drink adverts from a list of 25 campaigns.

A Guinness commercial shot in black and white featuring a surfer came top of the poll.

The Cinzano adverts featuring Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins came in second place followed by the Oxo family in third.

Nescafe’s Gold Blend commercials which showed a slow-burning romance between two neighbours is also included in the top 10 best food and drink adverts.

But readers disliked the Ferrero Rocher commercials, which Olive describes as: “Hilariously badly dubbed kitsch of the highest order.”

And the Hovis commercial contains: “As many lazy cliches about what life used to be like in the north as it’s possible to squeeze into 30 seconds,” the magazine adds.

The Milky Bar commercials fared badly, with the magazine saying: “Clearly the Milky Bar kid miscalculated – you hate the brat”.

And the Budweiser “Whassuuuupppp?” catchword is slated as “intolerable” by Olive.
