Steven Spielberg's epic movie Saving Private Ryan has been named Britain's favourite war film.

Steven Spielberg's epic movie Saving Private Ryan has been named Britain's favourite war film.

The gruesome 1999 drama, which tells the story of the search for Private Ryan during World War II, topped the movie poll commissioned by British TV network Channel 4.

Starring Tom Hanks, the war adventure won five Oscars at the 1999 Academy Awards and has been singled out as featuring the most realistic battle scenes ever.

The film beat off stiff competition from Vietnam war drama Apocalypse Now which came in second, and 1963 classic The Great Escape - which followed in third.

Spielberg's other acclaimed war movie, 1993's Schindler's List, came in fourth.
