Gardaí and PSNI officers will today continue a Special Olympics torch run spanning the island of Ireland.

The police forces are participating in four running routes which began yesterday and will end in Dublin on Wednesday.

Separate runs began yesterday in Killarney, Sligo, Dungarvan and Donegal town and will touch on almost every county during the next three days.

Garda officers first took part in the police torch run in 1989 and were joined by the PSNI in 1996.

A team of 143 Irish athletes will participate in 11 competitions at the World Summer Games in Shanghai next month.

A reception in the Westmanstown Sports Centre in Lucan on Wednesday will mark the formal departure of the athletes to the Olympics.
