Motivator to retire at end of season

Vodafone Derby winner Motivator will be syndicated to stand at Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Stud at Sandringham when retiring at the end of the season.

Vodafone Derby winner Motivator will be syndicated to stand at Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Stud at Sandringham when retiring at the end of the season.

Trained by Michael Bell and owned by the Royal Ascot Racing Club, the three-year-old was a runaway winner of the blue riband having previously landed the Dante Stakes at York.

“We are delighted this outstanding son of Montjeu will be standing at stud in England,” said the Queen’s bloodstock advisor John Warren.

“Motivator will retire after running in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Belmont. He has an excellent chance of adding to his marvellous record in both races.

“Her Majesty is thrilled to have such a special horse, who was an unbeaten Group One-winning two-year-old, coming to Sandringham where the champions Shirley Heights and Bustino have stood before.”

Bell added: “From a personal point of view I find it disappointing but from a commercial point of view and from the horse’s point of view, it is very exciting for all of the breeders in the country.

“He is almost the perfect racehorse and it will be very exciting for British breeders to have a horse of this quality.”

Motivator has finished runner-up to Oratorio on his last two outings in the Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes, and is now set to head to Longchamp on October 2.

“He is in great form,” Bell told Racing UK.

“He cantered this morning and we are very much looking forward to the Arc, where we hope he has got an outstanding chance.”

Harry Herbert, racing manager to the Royal Ascot Racing Club, said from the Keeneland September yearling sales: “It’s incredibly exciting it has all come together and Her Majesty is over the moon.

“It is great news for British breeders and also for European breeders in general that a horse of this calibre is going to stand in this country.

“It has not happened for a long time.

“John Warren is working on the syndication and is speaking to a number of people about shares in the horse. He will no doubt issue details when the sale has been completed.”

Herbert believes Motivator can add to his stature on the track before he is sent to stud.

“We are taking one race at a time but should he come out of the Arc in fine shape then he will have his final race in the Breeders’ Cup Turf,” he added.

“It wd be just marvellous if he could win one or both of those races.

“We have always had the Breeders’ Cup under consideration as a race for him. Given his ground he could go really well.

“He had the necessary speed to win a Group One race at two (the Racing Post Trophy) and has proved very effective at the highest level in two races over a mile and a quarter, as well as winning the Derby most impressively.”
