Frank Rijkaard’s agent has denied the former Holland international is a potential candidate to take over as Chile coach following the resignation of Marcelo Bielsa.

Bielsa chose to vacate his role after three successful years during which he took Chile to their first World Cup since 1998 as they reached the last 16 in South Africa this summer before being beaten by Brazil.

The Argentinian was a hugely-popular figure and Chile now have to find a replacement with the likes of Luiz Felipe Scolari, Carlos Alberto Parreira and Carlos Bianchi all mentioned.

Rijkaard has also been linked with the role following his departure from Galatasaray with Chile football association (ANFP) vice-president elect Antonio Martinez refusing to discount the former AC Milan player, saying: “It is an alternative, like many others that we are evaluating.”

However, Perry Overeem has dismissed the reports, instead revealing Rijkaard has had interest from Italy and the Premier League with the 48-year-old strongly linked with Liverpool.

Overeem told El Mercurio: “I have not received any call from Chile or from that side of the world.

“The story is nothing but a rumour.

“For now he is in a period of rest and he has already had offers from clubs.

“He wants to choose major European football teams in the Premier League or Calcio”.“

Of the links with Roma and Liverpool, Overeem added: “I think that is attractive to a coach who showed in Barcelona he has the ability to manage in the best leagues in the world. He will surely be working in one or two months.”
