Alan Shearer has flown to the United States to consult a specialist about his knee injury.

The Newcastle striker will meet Dr Richard Steadman in a bid to discover whether he needs further surgery on the problem.

The former England captain suffered a a further injury setback only two games into his comeback from a nine-week lay-off.

"Alan has undergone initial tests and is due to meet again with Dr Steadman later today," said a club spokesman.

"It is not known at this stage whether another operation will be required or whether rest will be advised."
