Army battles fireworks warehouse fire

Four Green Goddesses have been called to a fire at a fireworks warehouse in Manchester.

Four Green Goddesses have been called to a fire at a fireworks warehouse in Manchester.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence says emergency services were called around to reports of a fire in the Ancoats area of Manchester city centre.

Within eight minutes an appliance was at the scene and soldiers have spent almost an hour-and-a-half trying to bring the blaze under control.

A total of four Green Goddesses and three breathing apparatus rescue teams are in action.

It is not thought anybody was inside the building, which some said was a disused fire station.

One worker who had been evacuated from a nearby building said that when the fire first caught alight, it was "like bonfire night".

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area after a number of main roads in Manchester city centre were closed.
