Sebastien Loeb is on the verge of victory in the San Remo Rally after winning today's first two stages.
The Citroen driver kept nearest challenger Markko Martin at arm’s length on the opening two of Sunday’s final four stages and, with a 40-second advantage going into the final 48 kilometres of the event, will win barring a disaster.
World Rally Championship leader Richard Burns looks like missing out on points as he is marooned down in ninth for Peugeot with little hope of progress.
That result would bring Loeb level on points with Burns at the top of the standings, with the Frenchman edging out his rival due to his victories this season.
Peugeot’s Marcus Gronholm is third with Carlos Sainz fourth for Citroen and set to move within two points of Burns in the championship. Colin McRae is seventh.
