Tony McCoy is looking forward to getting back aboard Acambo as he bids to maintain a perfect record over fences in the St James’s Place HBLB Novices’ Chase at Taunton.
Thursday’s two-mile-three-furlong event has also attracted Pepporoni Pete and Dusky Warbler, but McCoy is hoping for more of the same from the David Pipe-trained Acambo after the pair struck at Ascot in November.
“He won pretty good at Ascot and he jumped pretty well too,” said McCoy.
“Obviously Ascot takes a bit of jumping but he’s going to Taunton for what looks a pretty competitive race with Dusky Warbler and Pepporoni Pete, who ran well at Sandown.
“But he was higher-rated than them over hurdles, so hopefully there’s no reason why he can’t progress from his run at Ascot.”
Acambo heads Stan James’ ante-post betting at 9-1 for the Arkle Challenge Trophy in March and McCoy believes Taunton will provide the youngster with an ideal test at this stage of the season.
“It’s good experience as it’s quite a quick track and you need to travel and jump,” he told At The Races.
“He’s a good traveller normally and jumped pretty well at Ascot, so hopefully he’ll do OK.”
