Bowen Construction which has been involved in some of the biggest construction projects in the country in recent years is one of the lead firms in two deals worth €125m.

The Cork company has joined forces with two top Portuguese firms to win the contract to extend the Luas line from Cherrywood to St Stephen’s Green in Dublin.

The cost of the project is estimated at €85m.

The other partners in the scheme are Sacyr and Somague, both leading Portuguese specialist construction firms.

The second project involves the building of a new €40m maintenance facility for Iarnród Eireann’s new fleet of trains, in Portlaoise.

Somague is its partner in this project.

The Cherrywood project will result in the provision of an additional 7.5km length of track and 12 new luas line stops.

The project is expected to take almost three years to complete.

The Bowen Group is headed by John Bowen, chairman of the board of Crawford Art Gallery. In 2005 Mr Bowen organised an exhibition, marking Cork’s tenure as European Capital of Culture, at the gallery featuring four centuries of Cork silver and gold.

The Bowen Group’s activities embrace building, civil and mechanical engineering contracting and partnership property development.

Bowen Construction Ltd., Building and Civil Engineering Contractors and BMD & Co. Ltd., mechanical engineering contractors, are amongst the country’s foremost companies in their respective fields.

The Group which employs almost 1,000 has offices in Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Dublin, Belfast and London.
