Montenegro’s politicians have passed a new electoral law as part of reforms required by the European Union to be considered for membership in the bloc.

Parliament approved the law in a 71-0 vote, after months of negotiations between the ruling coalition and the opposition.

A two-thirds majority was needed in the 81-seat assembly for the bill to pass.

It outlines election rules according to EU standards and regulates the status of political parties representing the ethnic minorities in the Balkan republic.

Montenegro now hopes to win a date for starting EU accession talks, after achieving the status of a candidate for membership last year.

Montenegro gained independence from a union with Serbia in 2006.
