Burnley’s Barclays Premier League survival hung by a thread after a goalless first half at home to Liverpool.
The Clarets had to win as their goal difference was far inferior to 17th-placed West Ham, seven points ahead before kick-off, and despite two good chances for Steven Fletcher and Jack Cork they could not make the breakthrough.
For the visitors chances were hard to come by, a 19th-minute shot by Babel was pulled well wide from 20 yards.
On the half-hour, Gerrard had two half-chances but neither really threatened Brian Jensen.
The first was deflected by Cork into the body of referee Phil Dowd and his shot on the turn from the penalty spot was gathered safely by the Burnley goalkeeper.
