A multi million pound motor yacht missed its Florida destination when its skipper fell asleep at the helm yesterday and ran aground on a beach near Port Everglades.

Delivery skipper Colin Derth was the only person on board the 78 foot Three D of Guernsey on a voyage from the Bahamas.

“It was just him on board and he’s OK,” said Coast Guard spokeswoman Carleen Drummond. ”The person just basically fell asleep,” she said.

Coast Guards said the luxury 90 ton yacht, which was built last year, was not damaged and was refloated at high tide.

The name of the yacht’s owner was not released.
