Wozniacki close to perfection at Wimbledon

Wimbledon top seed Caroline Wozniacki produced a near-faultless performance as she eased into the fourth round with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Australia’s Jarmila Gajdosova.

Wimbledon top seed Caroline Wozniacki produced a near-faultless performance as she eased into the fourth round with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Australia’s Jarmila Gajdosova.

Wozniacki, the world number one who is in pursuit of her maiden grand slam title, broke Gajdosova once in the first set and twice in the second to complete a routine win on Centre Court.

The Danish 20-year-old made just five unforced errors in the match and will now face Dominika Cibulkova, who advanced today with a three-set victory over 16th seed Julia Goerges.

Competing in a women’s draw which features multiple grand slam champions such as Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters, Wozniacki still has much to prove.

She is constantly being asked whether she can justify being world number one without having transferred her consistency from the WTA Tour – where she has won five titles this year – to the grand slam stage.

But Wozniacki is going about her business at Wimbledon in solid fashion.

She may be creating fewer headlines than some of her more illustrious competitors but Wozniacki now has three straight-sets wins under her belt.

Reaching the fourth round equals her previous best performance at Wimbledon, when she lost in the last 16 to Sabine Lisicki in 2009.

Wozniacki had beaten Gajdosova in both their previous meetings and rarely looked in danger of losing her 100% record today behind a reliable first serve.

Gajdosova’s first serve dipped below 50% early on and she eventually paid the price as Wozniacki secured the break for a 5-3 lead and then wrapped up the opening set.

Wozniacki broke early in the second set for a 2-1 lead and then recovered from 30-40 down in the next game to consolidate the advantage.

The Monaco resident broke again for a 5-2 lead after a seventh game featuring a thrilling point.

Gajdosova chased down a lob and played the ball back over her opponent’s head, only for Wozniacki to put away the backhand winner for break point.

Gajdosova saved that one but Wozniacki soon sealed the second break and wrapped up the victory to move quietly but confidently into the fourth round.
