There were fears today for the lives of 31 Iraqi policemen who were kidnapped while returning from training in Jordan.

A police spokesman said that the men were ambushed on Sunday in a hotel in the town of Rutba near the Jordanian border.

He said the armed group had kidnapped the policemen, many of whom were from Diyala province.

Last month, nine Iraqi policemen returning from a training course in Jordan were ambushed and killed on their way home to Karbala.
