A Jonathan Daniels goal, nine minutes into the second half, ensured saw Wicklow defeat UCD in tonight's O'Byrne Shield preliminary round tie.

The Garden County led 0-04 to 0-03 at the break in a windy Roundwood, Tommy Gill landing three of the home side's points.

A point from Fermanagh's James Sherry levelled matters for the students on the restart, but Daniels' goal was to prove decisive.

Wicklow hung on despite having defender Gary Duffy sent off for his second bookable offence.

Hugh Kenny's men will face DCU, who surprised Carlow last weekend, in the Shield's last four.
