Tank rolls over Mallard rivals

Sendintank is the new favourite for the totesport Cesarewitch after his dramatic last-gasp victory in the Ladbrokes Mallard Stakes at Doncaster.

Cristoforo was sent straight into the lead in the extended 14-furlong contest and Barney Curley’s runner was still going strongly in front as they raced down the home stretch with Sendintank, the 100-30 favourite, in mid-division.

At the two-pole, Jamie Spencer switched the market leader out to make his challenge, although he still looked as though he had plenty to do.

But he picked up in great style and staying on in determined fashion, he caught the gallant pacesetter close home to score by three-quarters of a length.

Coral were most impressed and made Sendintank their 6-1 favourite for the Cesarewitch, in which he will shoulder a 7lb penalty, with Ladbrokes, VC Bet and William Hill quoting 7-1, while totesport have the gelding at 8-1.

Trainer Stuart Williams confirmed the progressive five-year-old on course for next month’s Newmarket marathon.

He said: “The Cesarewitch is the main target. He will get a penalty but I would still like to think he would have a chance. He travels well for a distance horse.

“Give in the ground makes all the difference, he likes to get his toe in and he has been unlucky with the ground and the draw before today.”

Godolphin look to have another potential star on their hands in Echo Of Light, who made all the running under Kerrin McEvoy to trounce his rivals in the orderIT-online.com Conditions Stakes.

The son of Dubai Millennium had opened his account in facile fashion at Yarmouth last month and he was sent off the 9-4 favourite to stage a repeat performance in this 10-furlong event, in which he sported a crossed noseband “to help him relax”.

He did not let his supporters down with a seven-length thrashing of Khyber Kim after drawing steadily clear in the straight.

“Easy money today,” said trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

He added: “He was a big baby last year and he is improving all the time. After every race he learns more each time.

“He was still a little bit keen early on but he had the class.

“There are no plans for him at the moment but we will find a better race if we run him again this season. A Listed race could be possible for him.

“He will be much better next year and I think a mile and a half will be no problem for him.”

Princess Cleo, disqualified after being first past the post at Southwell in July, more than made up for her demotion with victory in the £40,000 DBS St Leger Yearling Stakes.

Trainer Tim Easterby contested the Southwell stewards’ decision at the Jockey Club but he lost his appeal.

However, it all worked out right for connections when they netted the winner’s purse of £27,000 in the race for those horses who missed the cut for Wednesday’s £300,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes.

The 20-1 shot hit the front under Richard Quinn on the far side over two furlongs out and she soon had the race in the bag, winning comfortably by a length and a half from Sir Orpen.

“I wasn’t surprised at all by that – she’s always been alright,” said Easterby. “She has been dying for this cut in the ground.

“She ran a good race at Thirsk last time but I think the ground was a bit quick for her.

“She has actually won a race before but I won’t say any more about that.

“That was great today – justice has been done.”
