At least 11 people have been killed in Burkina Faso after a truck collided with two buses, state television said.

Jean Ouedraogo, a resident in the town of Boromo where the vehicles collided, said one of the buses was heading for Mali and the other was driving toward Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou nearly 110 miles north-east.

Mr Ouedraogo said there were Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal nationals among the dead.

State TV said the accident occurred after the buses tried to overtake the truck.

It reported that at least 40 people were injured in the accident and have been taken to hospitals.

Road accidents are common across West Africa.

Buses are frequently overcrowded and the poorest people often ride to their destinations on the top of trucks moving goods to market.
