Police in Tanzania are ordering all drivers to take hearing and sight tests to try cut the number of accidents.

Police chiefs in Mwanza region say poor sight and hearing are a leading cause of crashes.

Commissioner Eliha Kihengu says 40% of those already tested have failed at least one of the tests.

Local media say around 500 people have already been tested.

The commissioner expects around 1,500 people will have taken the tests by the end of the year.

Drivers will have to take the tests twice a year, the commissioner says.
