Ireland came from behind to win but it was a mere consolation as England's defeat of Slovenia earlier in the day meant Ireland won't be attending the finals in July.

Johan Vonlanthen shot the Swiss in front on 31 minutes.

But Ireland hit back to turn the game around with goals from John Flood and Neil McCafferty within 12 minutes of the start of the second half.

Willo Flood made it 3-1 on 66 minutes before Vonlanthen got his second on 88 minutes.

In between Ireland's Glenn Whelan and Tranquillo Barnetta were sent off before the Swiss saw a second yellow card for Mijat Maric in stoppage time.
