Mulholland chasing Gold place

Neil Mulholland believes course specialist Midnight Chase has got solid each-way claims in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday.

Neil Mulholland believes course specialist Midnight Chase has got solid each-way claims in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday.

The 10-year-old has come through the chasing ranks with a love of the course that has seen him notch up five victories.

His most notable success was his latest one in the Argento Chase in January that has seen Midnight Chase figure quite prominently in the ante-post market at a top-priced 12-1.

He was fifth in the Gold Cup 12 months ago when his regular rider Dougie Costello was injured and could not take the mount.

Mulholland is now just praying for a clear run over the next few days for both horse and jockey.

“Midnight Chase worked on Saturday morning and we are very happy with him at the moment,” said the Devon trainer.

“He’s in great form and we are obviously looking forward to running him on Friday.

“It was only his second season chasing last year and he’s stronger now.

“He was only beaten 19 lengths in last year’s race, when Tom Scudamore rode him because Dougie Costello got injured on the day before The Festival. Hopefully, Dougie can stay in one piece this time.

“We are hoping for a place and anything else would be a bonus.”
