Fenerbahce appeals to Campbell - report

Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has claimed he is likely to join Fenerbahce this summer, according to reports in Turkey.

Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has claimed he is likely to join Fenerbahce this summer, according to reports in Turkey.

Campbell, who is in Baden-Baden with the England squad ahead of the World Cup, has been linked with a move to Istanbul after a troubled season at Highbury.

“The probability of me joining Fenerbahce is very high,” Campbell told the Vatan newspaper.

“Not because they’ve offered me a lot of money, but because they have challenged me. Everything will be clearer after the World Cup.”

Campbell revealed he had been aware of Fenerbahce’s interest for several months, and likes what he has heard from the club that finished second in the Super Lig last season.

“It is obvious that they are considering me seriously,” Campbell said. “They made me a good and full offer. We are progressing step-by-step. I will give my decision after the World Cup.

“But, the probability of me joining Fenerbahce is bigger than that of refusing the offer.”

The 31-year-old defender’s Arsenal career looked in doubt after he was substituted and left Highbury midway through a Barclays Premiership game against West Ham in February.

His return to the team in April was hampered by injury, but he found his best form towards the end of the season and scored for the Gunners in their 2-1 Champions League final defeat at the hands of Barcelona.

Campbell has visited Istanbul to play against the national team for England, and he was impressed by what he saw on that visit.

“I know that Fenerbahce is the club which has the best conditions in Turkey,” he added. “Fenerbahce is a club with very high ambitions and has interesting potential.

“After the stories in Turkey were first written about me, all my Turkish friends in London spoke to me. I got information on Fenerbahce and Istanbul from them.

“Since I am at the World Cup, I am still thinking. I didn’t sign any official document yet.

“I believe Fenerbahce are also still thinking. I will give my final decision after the World Cup.

“It might be interesting for me to play for Fenerbahce. But we to return a victory for England first. That’s all I want right now.”
