South African Trevor Immelman is in the driving seat with a round to play in the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth.
Outshining playing partner and fellow countryman Ernie Els, Immelman closed with three birdies and moved onto the 14 under par mark with a 64 that was only one outside the course record.
Els had to birdie the last two to be joint second with Spain’s Ignacio Garrido, while Nick Faldo closed five behind and Colin Montgomerie six back.
Alongside Montgomerie on eight under with two to play was overnight leader Darren Clarke, who had two early double bogeys.
Immelman pitched to three feet on the 17th and then birdied the last as well - in fact, he was agonisingly close to holing his 40-foot eagle attempt.
If it had dropped it would have equalled the course record, but he was still delighted with a 64 and 14 under par total.
Els also birdied the last two and joined Garrido in second place on 11 under.
