Bolt runs season's best in Zagreb

Usain Bolt ran a season’s best 9.85 seconds to win the World Challenge meeting in Zagreb tonight in his first 100 metres since false starting at the World Championships.

Usain Bolt ran a season’s best 9.85 seconds to win the World Challenge meeting in Zagreb tonight in his first 100 metres since false starting at the World Championships.

The Jamaican finished well clear of the field with world bronze medallist Kim Collins second in 10.01secs.

The 25-year-old surrendered his world 100m title to compatriot Yohan Blake after his stunning disqualification in the final in Daegu last month, although he went on to retain his 200m and sprint relay crowns.

Blake has since set a new personal best of 9.82s, while Asafa Powell, who missed out on the championships through injury, still holds the fastest time of the year with 9.78.

Bolt’s previous best this season had been 9.88, well off his world record of 9.58.

Both Bolt and Blake are due to race at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels on Friday, but in different events, with Bolt set to line up in the 100m and his training partner in the 200m.

Christine Ohuruogu, who declared herself “broken” after also false starting in Daegu, ran her fastest time since 2009 as she finished fourth in the 400m.

The Olympic champion, who has been beset by injury problems since her gold medal in Beijing in 2008, clocked 50.85, a huge improvement on her previous best this year of 51.49.

Her best last season was 50.88, meaning tonight’s run suggests things are finally looking up for the 27-year-old.

Novlene Williams-Mills won the race in 50.31.

World bronze medallist Andy Turner had to settle for fifth place in the 110m hurdles as Dayron Robles, whose disqualification in Daegu promoted the Briton to third, claimed victory.

The Cuban won in 13.00 with Turner clocking 13.33, 0.11 faster than he ran in Daegu.

Jemma Simpson, who missed the World Championships, equalled her season’s best of 1:59.59 to finish third in the 800m.

Mark Lewis-Francis won the 100m ’B’ race in 10.35, while Jeanette Kwakye finished sixth in the women’s 100m in 11.51.

Abi Oyepitan was fifth in the 200m in 23.27.

Shara Proctor, the Anguillan-born long jumper who switched her allegiance to Britain last year, was second with 6.63m.
