The 63-year-old man who is in hospital tonight in the United States with pulmonary anthrax is in a critical condition.

Dr Larry Bush, of the JFK Medical Centre in Palm Beach, Florida, said the man was in a ‘‘critical’’ condition on a ventilator.

He had been admitted to the hospital suffering from confusion and vomiting and his condition quickly deteriorated.

‘‘He is critically ill but hopefully will respond to the treatment,’’ said the doctor.

He said it was believed the man had contracted the case in Florida, not in North Carolina.
