BLACK AND WHITE is the story of one man’s fight to change the system, a fight that led to radical changes in South Australia’s judicial authority and police procedure.
Set in a desert town in 1959, Aborigine Max Stuart (David Ngoombujarra) is charged with the rape and murder of a young girl.
The local police say he confessed to attacking the child after a day of heavy drinking, but Max claims they tortured him and that he only confessed to save his life.
Lawyers David O’Sullivan (Robert Carlyle) and Helen Devaney (Kerry Fox) take on the case.
They are faced across the courtroom floor by a ruthless prosecutor, Roderic Chamberlain (Charles Dance), who seems to think winning is more important than justice.
Robert Carlyle is particularly forceful as the crusading O’Sullivan who sticks by his client against all the odds.
