Michael Douglas is to reprise his Oscar-winning role as ruthless corporate raider Gordon Gekko, Oliver Stone's poster-boy for 80s greed from the film 'Wall Street'.
The producer of the 1987 film, Edward Pressman, has signed a deal with Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox to develop a sequel. It will be entitled 'Money Never Sleeps', after one of Gekko's two-a-penny phrases, alongside "lunch is for wimps and "greed, for lack of a better word, is good".
Pressman declined to reveal details of the plot. Screenwriter Stephen Schiff is currently working on the script and is expected to complete it by the end of the year.
Although Michael Douglas will take part in the sequel, Oliver Stone, who co-wrote and directed the original, will not be returning, despite the best efforts to encourage him. Charlie Sheen, who played Gekko's protégé Bud Fox, is also not expected to appear, as it seems there is no part for his character in the script.
When it hit cinemas in 1987 'Wall Street' was not a big commercial hit. However, it did draw a cult following among financial types and Michael Douglas won a best actor Oscar for this role.
