Arsenal captain Thierry Henry admits finally winning the Champions League with Arsenal would be “extra special”.
The Gunners, notorious under-performers in Europe in recent seasons, have won all three games in the competition so far but trail Chelsea by 14 points in the Barclays Premiership to leave their title challenge diminished at best.
And French World Cup-winner Henry, who returned from a nagging groin injury to equal and then break Ian Wright’s 185-goal club record with a brace against Sparta Prague on Tuesday, admits he is desperate to win the one trophy which has eluded him so far.
“It’s funny because it used to be the other way round, people asked me ‘why are you not doing well in Europe but you are doing well in the league?’
“Without looking for excuses we have been missing important and key players and unlike some teams in Europe we don’t have international players in the stand or on the bench.
“When we get chance to put our best XI out there we can try to go on a run. We’ll try to before then but it is easier when everybody is fit,” he told Arsenal TV Online.
“I’ve always said winning the Champions League with Arsenal would be extra special as the club has never done it and it’s always special when you are the first to do something.
“The only thing missing in my career is winning the Champions League and it will be even more special if we do it with Arsenal.”
The departure of skipper Patrick Vieira in the summer saw Henry handed the armband by Arsene Wenger and though his season has been disrupted by injury so far, the striker does not believe it will add weight to the responsibility he shoulders.
“I’ve played five games and scored five goals. I only look at the statistics and I didn’t play for a month.
“There is no extra weight whatsoever.”
