The White House says President George W Bush meant no offence when he referred to the people of Pakistan as ‘Pakis’.

The White House says President George W Bush meant no offence when he referred to the people of Pakistan as ‘Pakis’.

Bush told reporters yesterday that the US was working hard to convince both ‘the Indians and the Pakis there is a way to deal with their problems without going to war’.

The term is regarded as offensive by many Pakistanis.

A White House spokesman insists President Bush has great respect for Pakistan which is a key ally in the war in Afghanistan.

However he did not apologise or withdraw the remark.
