A special meeting of the 25 EU development aid ministers has been called to coordinate the relief effort for the victims of the tidal waves in Asia and Africa.

“It is the intention to reinforce cooperation regarding emergency aid,” said Belgian Development Aid minister Armand De Decker.

In addition, the meeting would set up a programme for the reconstruction of the stricken countries.

The EU already has promised emergency aid far beyond the €2.83m in relief initially committed to help the victims in coastal communities of several Asian nations around Indonesia.

National EU governments have committed several million pounds on top of that figure.
