Human remains found in remote woodland are almost certainly those of missing schoolgirl Amanda Dowler, police said today.

The 13-year-old, who was also known as Milly, was identified using dental records after the discovery near Fleet in Hampshire, Detective Superintendent Alan Betts of Hampshire Police said.

Confirmation comes on the day Milly’s parents said they feared she had been abducted and murdered in interviews to mark her disappearance six months ago tomorrow.

Speaking at the police cordon close to where the remains were found, Mr Betts said: “We can now confirm that the results of the examination were almost certainly that of missing Amanda.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Denholm, who led the investigation for Surrey Police, said: “Our worst fears have been confirmed and I can now tell you that the search for Milly has changed from a missing persons inquiry into a murder investigation.”

Milly was last seen walking back from school to her home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey on March 21.
