Several people have been killed in attacks in southern Israel, a military spokesman said today.

Gunmen ambushed a bus near the border with Egypt and soldiers were targeted by bombs.

A passenger car was attacked following the bus attack.

The spokesman, Brig-Gen Yoav Mordechai, said there were fatalities as well as wounded. Civilians and soldiers were among the casualties.

He also reported a shootout between security forces and attackers in the bus attack.

Rescue services officials say five people have been critically wounded in the attack on the car and five were moderately wounded in the attack on the bus.

Brig-Gen Mordechai says security forces tracked down some of the attackers and exchanged fire with them.

He says the attackers used heavy weapons, possibly mortars or anti-tank weapons, and explosive devices during the attacks.
